Socialization is extremely important - especially in the first 16 weeks of your puppy's life. During this time, we want to focus on making the world appear to be a safe, fun place with all sorts of sights, smells and sounds! We will focus on Habituation (where dogs become familiar and non reactive towards all sorts of stimuli) and Localization (developing familiarity and a positive attachment to various places/environments up until they reach 4 months old. After 16 weeks, the critical period of socialization ends and it becomes more difficult for your puppy to become familiar with the unfamiliar. When this happens, dogs may become uncomfortable in unfamiliar situations and and may behave in one of two ways: he may chose to flight to get away from the thing or he may act out (fight) to get the thing to go away. It is key to make socialization a priority - click the button below to learn how to be thoughtful and strategic in your approach with our lesson on how to make each new experience a positive one with treats, praise and toys!
